What is a HUID?

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a 6-digit alphanumeric code (for example, a mix of letters and numbers) that is laser-marked on a piece of jewellery when it is hallmarked at a BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Each piece gets its own code, so no two pieces share a HUID.

The code is linked to a record that stores the jeweller's details, the type of article and the purity that was tested. This is why HUID makes it easy for a customer to confirm that the purity written on the bill matches what was actually tested.

What marks should a hallmarked piece carry?

A BIS hallmark on gold jewellery today has three parts:

• The BIS logo - the standard mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
• The purity grade - written as carat and fineness, for example 22K916, 18K750 or 14K585.
• The 6-character HUID - the unique code for that piece.

Marks are tiny. Use a jeweller's loupe or your phone camera zoom, and look on the inside of rings and bangles, near the clasp of chains and on the back of pendants.

How to verify a HUID on the BIS Care app

1. Install the BIS Care app from Google Play or the App Store (published by the Bureau of Indian Standards).
2. Open the app and choose Verify HUID.
3. Type the 6-character HUID printed on your jewellery.
4. The app shows details such as the jeweller's registration, the article type, the purity and the hallmarking centre.
5. Compare these with your invoice. If anything does not match, contact the jeweller immediately and keep the invoice.

Do this at the time of delivery or purchase, not months later, so any issue can be fixed quickly.

What should your bill show?

A proper gold jewellery invoice should list the item, gross and net weight, purity, the rate used, making charges, stone value (if any), GST and the HUID of each article.
